A well-known person or thing is known about by a lot of people and is therefore famous or familiar. If someone is well-known for a particular activity, a lot of people know about them because of their involvement with that activity.

e.g. He surrounds himself with attractive, intelligent, or well-known people...
他混迹于有魅力、有学问或有名气的人当中。
e.g. He is well-known to the local police...
当地警察都知道他。

2. 为人所熟知的
A well-known fact is a fact that is known by people in general.

e.g. It may be a well-known fact, but I didn't know it...
这可能是人所共知的事实，但我却不知道。
e.g. It is well known that bamboo shoots are a panda's staple diet.
